About the Top 40 Awards

Penticton’s Top 40 Over/Under 40 is a recognition program that identifies 20 outstanding leaders under 40 years of age, and 20 outstanding leaders who are 40 years of age and older, living and/or working in the South Okanagan-Similkameen. These individuals are inspiring, innovative, create a significant and positive impact, and are community minded.


Recipients from both the Under 40 and the 40 and Over categories were announced every Friday starting April 12th through until August 23rd, with awards presented at a special gala on September 13th aboard the iconic S.S. Sicamous.

Ian Lindsay

South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation


As the CEO of the South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation, Ian Lindsay brings a wealth of experience, education, and past successes to a role that has a direct impact on our health and the quality of care we receive at public healthcare facilities throughout the region. While the commitment to raising $10 million for Penticton Regional Hospital’s Oncology Department had been made just prior to joining the team last November, Ian’s impact to the Medical Foundation and our community can already be felt.

Naomi Antler

KISU Swim Club


Beginning as a volunteer with the Similkameen Steelheads Swim Club in Keremeos, Naomi Antler is now an assistant coach with Penticton’s KISU Swim Club, where she coaches pre-competitive swimmers, and is also the head coach and direct supervisor for the ‘mini squad’, more formally known as KISU’s ‘Learn to Swim’ program. Naomi’s work with KISU’s para swimmers has seen her completely adapt her teaching style to fit the needs of her students, and has resulted in their record-breaking success at the national level.

Amanda Locke

Wordplay Therapy Services Inc.


Amanda began her professional journey by graduating first in her class at Western University with dual honors in Linguistics and Psychology followed by a master’s in speech language pathology from the University of Toronto. From there, she accepted an international placement in Trinidad and Tobago and gained valuable insight into cultural sensitivity, client-centred care, and the world of private practice.


In 2019, Amanda accepted a job in Penticton but ended up sustaining a significant concussion less than a year later. It was during her year-long recovery that she began to identify the South Okanagan’s need for a client-first approach combined with her own gradual return to work. Read more...

Starting in a local winery’s tasting room, Maddison’s aim has always been to demystify wine and make it a relatable and enriching experience for everyone. Today, she has 8 years of experience in winemaking, and has received such accolades as Wine & Spirits Education Trust’s (WSET) Future 50 Under 40 Wine Award, was the only Canadian winner in an international competition, and most recently, was named a Top 40 Under 40 by the Business Elite Awards that recognizes leaders from across the country and world. Furthermore, her first wines produced at Ve Oh Lay won bronze and gold in the National Wine Align Awards in Penticton and double gold at the International Platinum Awards.

Kristen Gudmundson

YMCA of Southern Interior B.C.


After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree majoring in sociology from UBCO, Kristen started her career with the Y as a Facilitator working in a program with youth aged 13-18 years old on the Autism Spectrum and led workshops practicing healthy living and building strong relationships with peers. From there, and over the past 4-and-a-half years, she has worked in her current role as an Employment Facilitator and has so far supported over 100 youth with barriers to employment in finding and maintaining meaningful work, and another 19 who have chosen to pursue further education.

As the General Manager of one of Penticton’s largest employers, Brannigan Mosses manages up to 300 employees at the Penticton Lakeside Resort and Conference Centre and has successfully navigated the Resort through challenges such as COVID-19 restrictions, wildfires, highway landslides, and economic uncertainty. Despite these challenges, Brannigan’s leadership ensures an outstanding experience for guests and a great working environment for team members.

Artist, Storyteller, SOS Pride


Madeline’s creative journey is as diverse as it is impactful. Their first mural, “Chief Skemxist,” stands proudly in downtown Keremeos, B.C., symbolizing Madeline’s deep connection to the Similkameen Valley. In 2017, Madeline embraced the art of burlesque, performing as Mother Girth, “the two-spirit tease,” and earned the title of ‘Most Innovative’ at the Edmonton Burlesque Festival. Burlesque has been a transformative tool for Madeline, leading to body positivity and nurturing self-love and respect.


Madeline’s foray into drag performance began unexpectedly. After dressing up as “Rez Dude” for Halloween and thoroughly enjoying the experience, they decided to bring the character to the stage as "Rez Daddy." Read more...

Penticton and District Community Arts Council


Travel played a key role in Tristan’s development, starting with solo trips to Borneo, Malaysia. After pursuing a culinary degree from the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts in Vancouver and later an art program in Montreal, Tristan spent a total of 15 years in almost 40 different countries, working as a freelance writer and art director in cities like Berlin and London, and for high-profile clients like Disney and Virgin Media.

Nicole moved to Penticton back in 1992 when her parents purchased their very first Tim Hortons. After graduating with a degree in culinary arts and hospitality from Le Cordon Bleu in Las Vegas, Nicole worked as a team member in the family business, learning each and every role in Tim Hortons before becoming an approved Franchisee alongside her parents, Paul and Beryl Stawarz, in 2022.

As a happily married indigenous mother of 2 boys and 1 step son, Kassity Van Alphen started her own fitness company, Femme Form Coaching, after years of professional mentorship. Melissa has spent the past 15 years teaching middle school and is currently finishing her Masters of Education in curriculum studies. Prior to teaching, she received a bachelor’s with a double major in history and education and then pursued a post-baccalaureate in leadership and mentorship. Melissa is also a ‘Mind-Up’ trainer and ‘RULER’ facilitator for School District 67 – programs that focus on social and emotional learning to provide students with essential skills that are needed for success in the classroom and beyond.

Jaimie Kidston Law Office


A lifelong resident of the Okanagan, Lindsey’s professional journey first began in the wine industry, including serving on the Board of the Naramata Bench Wineries Association and even obtained her Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) level 3 in Florence, Italy, which is no easy feat given only 50% of students globally pass the exam. From there, she set her sights on the law, receiving her Juris Doctor from Thompson Rivers University, which for those unfamiliar with the term is a 3-year law degree that can be taken only after having already earned a bachelor’s degree.


It is in her capacity as a lawyer that Lindsey quietly but impressively contributes to the wellbeing of

Following graduation, she worked as a journalist for Women & Home Magazine and a VIP Coordinator at The Ritz London before attending Oxford Brooks University for a Masters in International Relations Management. Upon returning home, Elizabeth held a variety of roles in the family’s business of RPB Hotels, including graphic design, marketing, administration, public relations and executive management, helping to oversee and participate in larger-scale construction projects, such as the Penticton Lakeside Resort's West Wing annex and West Conference Centre as well as a number of renovations. Embracing her family’s legacy of becoming the biggest supplier of scooped ice cream in Western Canada, Kelsey has expanded Tickleberry’s to three locations and has grown the staff from a compliment of 5 to over 70 workers during the peak season.

Serendipity Winery


Originally hailing from Ontario, Katie had only meant to stay in the Okanagan for nine months after deciding that working in cancer research, while commendable, was simply not for her. 12 years later, she is the co-owner of Serendipity Winery, has served on a number of not-for-profit Boards like SOWINS, Seniors Wellness Society, the Naramata Bench Wineries Association, and came within 300 votes to winning a seat on Penticton’s City Council this past election.


Her role at Serendipity started in the vineyard and expanded to various facets of the winemaking process, eventually becoming the head winemaker and growing Serendipity’s wine club from zero to almost 750 members. Read more...

Raised in Port Coquitlam, Carl was a competitive figure skater, tap dancer, and loved to perform. Born and raised in Penticton, Ashlie was a keen student of the arts starting at the age of 8 in voice, dance and acting. As an adult, she became a graduate of the Canadian College of Performing Arts with a career that has been marked by notable performances with various theatre companies, including The Arts Club, Theatre Under the Stars and Gateway Theatre Co. She also captivated audiences as a main stage singer for Norwegian Cruise Lines and was one of the final contestants on CBC's reality TV search "Maria."

Victora was born and raised on the unceded traditional territory of the syilx peoples, deeply rooted in a family of knowledge keepers fluent in nsyilxcen and trained in storytelling and performance using syilx worldviews. She has since become an apprentice of the nsyilxcen language, songs, dances, ceremony, protocols, and through her work with En'owkin Centre's Nak'ulamen Performance Collective along with six other performers, she has assisted in revitalizing Syilx performance back into the community.

Penticton Secondary School - School District 67


After receiving a Bachelor of Music with a Major in Education from the University of Victoria, Justin Glibbery's career in music education has now spanned 32 years exclusively in Penticton, first at Princess Margaret Junior Secondary back in 1992, and 2 years later, at Penticton Secondary where he continues to work today. Originally from Abbotsford, Justin quickly realized that Penticton was where he wanted to call home and establish his career, both as a teacher and as a professional pianist and composer.

Castanet Media, The Feedway


Back in 2014 when she was named a Top 40 Under 40, Jasmine was an account executive at Sun FM while co-owning and operating the Penticton Speedway with her husband and racing enthusiast, Johnny Aantjes. Today, Jasmine is celebrating her eighth anniversary as the General Manager of Castanet Media in the South Okanagan. She spearheaded the opening of the Penticton office in 2016, and over the past eight years, her team has published 19,776 stories, garnering over 167 million views. Just last month, Castanet expanded by opening a second South Okanagan office in Osoyoos, adding a full-time journalist and a sales manager to their team.

Ann Doyon

Ann Doyon Art and Design, Theytus Books


Ann’s career has received international acclaim with her artwork featured in collections across Turtle Island (also known as North and Central America). Based on the lands of the syilx people, Ann divides her time between her own company, Ann Doyon Art and Design, and as the Production Coordinator at Theytus Books, a 43-year-old Indigenous publishing company owned and operated by the Okanagan Indian Education Resources Society where the word Theytus, in Salish, means “preserving for the sake of handing down”. Working at the En'owkin Centre on the Penticton Indian Band, Ann upholds Theytus Books' mission of preserving Indigenous cultures and worldviews, while at night, she can be found in studio 8 developing new art and performances as an artist in residence at the Leir House.

Total Restoration Services, School District 67, Rotary Club of Penticton


Tracy grew up in Summerland before moving to Penticton, and joined the team at Total Restoration Services in 2014. Hard to believe but back then, Team Total only consisted of 5 employees and a 1-bay warehouse. Fast forward to today and you’ll see over 40 full-time staff working on a large piece of property within Penticton’s industrial district. As the Manager of Marketing and Community Relations, Tracy employed an innovative marketing strategy focused on community impact, which redefined Total Restoration Services’ approach to advertising. Instead of traditional methods, Tracy allocated the company’s advertising budget to support local non-profits  resulting  in  strong  community  relationships,  but  also significantly increased the company’s donations with $50,000 contributed to community sponsorships and thousands of volunteer hours from Team Total in 2023. Originally from Veracruz, Mexico, Ana moved to Alberta with her family while in her early teens. Later as an adult, she looked at warmer climates and almost moved to Kelowna before discovering the small-town charm and feel of Penticton. With a career spent in sales and marketing, Ana hadn’t considered becoming an entrepreneur until she was unable to find child care after her maternity leave. At that point, she began researching what it would take to start her own business, and through WorkBC South Okanagan, Ana was connected with Community Futures Okanagan Similkameen to receive small-business training.

Equipped with an MBA and big city marketing experience, Kenneth Barnes returned to the Okanagan in 2017 to raise his young family. Two years after the move, he started his own digital marketing agency KJB Digital and given its continued success along with its support of tackling childhood hunger and sponsoring youth sports, Kettle Valley Memorial and the Penticton & Wine Country Chamber of Commerce are pleased to announce Kenneth as the latest recipient of Penticton’s Top 40 awards.

Tim’s journey in the creative sphere began with multiple accolades in graphic design, including the inaugural Graphic Design award from the Penticton Arts Council and the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan in 2014. His ventures  extended to the realm of broadcasting, where his podcasts garnered recognition from the National Campus & Community Radio Association (NCRA), with "Sounds From the Tenacious Hi-Fi" earning the highest honors for excellence in music programming in Canada.

Diana Stirling is now a two-time Top 40 Recipient, this time in the 40 and Over category. Back in 2014 when Diana was named as a Penticton Top 40 Under 40, she ran LocoLanding Adventure Park employing 30 youth, but she also had a goal of creating more unique tourism businesses and experiences staffed entirely by teens. Today, Diana is the co-owner of not only LocoLanding but also Cherry on Top Shake Shop, Lickity Splitz Ice Cream, Cardle & Co., a proud co-partner with Penticton Indian Band in Coyote Cruises, and now employs around 150 teenagers.

Linda Sankey

South Okanagan Similkameen Brain Injury Society


Anyone familiar with Linda or her work knows how passionate she is about social wellness. She was a strong voice who urged the City of Penticton to create a social development department, which became reality 4 years ago and has since resulted in many new community programs and assistance for Penticton’s more vulnerable population. As co-Chair of the 100 More Homes Penticton, she has been able to advocate the needs of those experiencing homelessness by facilitating partnerships with other organizations like ASK Wellness. Catherine Jones

Penticton Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts


After working as a professional writer, editor, and content manager for 15 years, Catherine transitioned seamlessly into her current role and has propelled the organization to new heights of success, including a 25% growth in student registrations over the past year alone.


The Academy features 9 studios, 20 instructors, and approximately 350 students. Catherine spearheaded efforts to recruit highly accomplished musicians to enrich the educational experience that is offered to the students, and has expanded the Academy’s programming to cater to a wide range of age groups and musical interests, from early childhood music education for babies to engaging group singalongs for seniors. Criteria and Rules

Eligibility Guidelines:


The Nominee for Top 40 Over/Under 40:


  • Must be a resident of- or work in the South Okanagan-Similkameen.
  • Must work in a leadership role in any sized organization from the private, public, or not-for-profit sectors.
  • The Under 40 of the Top 40 Over/Under 40 will be limited to 20 Honourees who must be over the age of 18 and under the age of 40 for the entire calendar year of 2024, and had not already been selected as a Top 40 Under 40 back in 2014 (listed in appendix).
  • The Over 40 of the Top 40 Over/Under 40 will be limited to 20 Honourees who must be 40 years of age or older. It may also include those who were selected as a Top 40 Under 40 back in 2014 but are now 40 years of age or older.
  • Candidates may nominate themselves, but it is encouraged that the nomination of candidates are given by third parties as a testament to their positive impact on others. Nomination forms will form part of the overall nomination package submitted to- and reviewed by the Selection Committee.


The Selection Committee will be looking for evidence of the nominee’s achievements in each of the four selection criteria:


  1. Vision and Leadership;
  2. Innovation and Achievement;
  3. Impact and Positive Influence;
  4. Social Responsibility and Community Involvement.


Criteria 1 - Vision and Leadership:

  • What does the nominee imagine for the future of their organization and themselves?
  • What milestones have they reached and what goals have they committed to achieving?
  • How are they leading others to achieve their goals and fulfill their vision?
  • How are they inspiring those around them to better themselves and our community?


Criteria 2 - Innovation and Achievement:

  • What innovative ideas has the nominee created, advocated for, or implemented for their organization or professional position to affect a positive change? It does not have to be a major breakthrough, unique idea, or new business model, rather, it can be as simple as upgrades to their organization’s customer service, features added to an existing product, workplace culture, and more.
  • What awards, designations, or other forms of recognition has the nominee received? Alternately, is there a key performance metric(s) the nominee can provide to demonstrate sustained improvement in a relevant area vs an earlier time period, or vs their industry’s standard? 


Criteria 3 - Impact and Positive Influence:

  • How does the nominee provide a positive impact for their organization and/or their community?
  • How does the nominee provide a positive impact for others? ▪ Does the nominee volunteer their time outside of work? If so, with whom and how often?


Criteria 4 - Social Responsibility and Community Involvement:

  • How does the nominee or their business contribute to initiatives that reduce pollution, promote the sustainable use of natural resources, etc.?
  • Do the actions of the Nominee benefit the community? For example, is there a balance between economic growth and the welfare of society and the environment?
  • How does the nominee support charity(ies), non-profit organizations, or the causes that help their community?


Selection Process:


  • Anyone can nominate an individual residing or working in the South Okanagan-Similkameen, including themselves;
  • Nominees are required to complete an online submission;
  • All material is held in strict confidence and the submissions will be screened by Penticton Chamber staff, and then judged individually by the Penticton Top 40 Over/Under 40 selection committee (independent of each other to prevent judges from influencing each other).

- Nominees with incomplete submissions will be provided with feedback outlining what is outstanding along with a deadline to complete their submission.

  • Selection Committee members must recuse themselves from evaluating anyone they are related to, reside with, work with (at a place of business, governance board, etc.), or any other association that would call into question an individual evaluator’s impartiality.
  • The selection committee, at their discretion, may take reasonable steps to verify a nominee’s answers through a Chamber staff member. Judges will not contact a nominee directly.



Top 40 Timeline

February 7: Nominations Open at 4pm.

March 3: Nominations Close (end of day).


March 4 to April 4: Evaluation of all completed nominations.

April 12: First pair of Top 40 Recipients announced, and continue weekly.

August 23: Final pair of Top Recipients announced.


The Top 40 Gala will take place on Friday, September 13th, 2024.
